Authorities in Thessaloniki have launched urgent discussions over concerns about possible flight reductions at the city’s main airport, amid uncertainty surrounding airline operations.
An emergency meeting was convened by Mayor Stelios Angeloudis, bringing together regional tourism officials, municipal representatives and members of the local tourism organization. The talks focused on reports that routes to and from Thessaloniki Airport “Macedonia” could be scaled back.
Coordination with airlines and authorities
City officials have moved quickly to coordinate with national and industry stakeholders. Direct communication has already taken place with Andreas Fiorentinos, a senior representative of the Greek tourism authority, in an effort to ensure a unified response.
A virtual meeting has also been scheduled with executives from Ryanair, aiming to clarify the airline’s intentions and provide official updates on the situation.
At the same time, the municipality has contacted Fraport, the company managing the airport, requesting information on whether any changes have been made to its cooperation framework with the airline.
Broader response planned
Officials have also informed Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, seeking national-level awareness and support as the issue develops.
A broader meeting involving all relevant stakeholders in the city is expected to take place later this week, where data will be reviewed and a coordinated strategy will be discussed.
