Videos Allegedly Show Violence, Extortion Inside Korydallos Prison (Vid)

Footage reportedly shows inmate assaults and alleged extortion inside Greece’s largest prison

Two videos allegedly recorded in recent days inside the Korydallos Prison have raised new concerns over violence and alleged extortion inside the country’s largest correctional facility, according to media reports on Monday.

Korydallos is located in the same working-class district roughly between downtown Athens and Piraeus.

The footage reportedly shows an inmate of Asian origin serving a life sentence, who has also faced murder accusations linked to another prison, assaulting fellow prisoners. The inmate is alleged to have demanded money from relatives of the victims in exchange for stopping the beatings.

Relatives of prisoners who were allegedly attacked are expected to file complaints with the internal affairs division of Greek Police, seeking an investigation into whether prison staff tolerated or failed to prevent the incidents.

Officials from the relevant public order ministry said they were unaware of the allegations and would examine the circumstances surrounding the reported abuse, leaving open the possibility of a formal inquiry into conditions at Korydallos.

The allegations add to growing concerns over prison violence, overcrowding and criminal activity inside Greek correctional facilities over the past year. Authorities have faced mounting scrutiny following repeated reports of inmate assaults, gang-related intimidation, drug trafficking and failures in internal security across several prisons, particularly at Korydallos, which has long been viewed by security officials as a focal point for organized criminal networks operating both inside and outside prison walls.
