West Nile Virus Cases Rise by 47 in a Week

Four more deaths were reported in the latest weekly update, bringing the total number of deaths linked to West Nile virus in Greece this year to 13.

Forty-seven new cases and four additional deaths from West Nile virus were recorded in Greece over the past week, according to the weekly report issued by the National Public Health Organization (EODY).

The new cases were identified in the municipalities of Dionysos, Kallithea and Petroupoli in the Attica region, as well as the municipality of Alexandria in Imathia.

Since the beginning of the 2026 season through August 19, a total of 157 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and reported in Greece. Of these, 116 involved symptoms affecting the central nervous system, including encephalitis, meningitis or acute flaccid paralysis.

A further 41 cases involved mild symptoms or no central nervous system symptoms. During the past week alone, 47 new locally acquired cases were diagnosed.

One additional case was also diagnosed in a patient with a complex travel history that included time spent in an endemic country abroad. The likely country where the infection was acquired remains undetermined, and the case is therefore not included in the further analysis.

Overall, through August 19, 13 deaths have been recorded among patients infected with West Nile virus who developed central nervous system symptoms. All were over the age of 65.

The median age of those who died was 82, with ages ranging from 66 to 91.
