Greece is set for another rise in temperatures over the coming days, with highs expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius on Friday as mostly clear weather continues across the country.
According to the forecast issued Thursday, Aug. 20, temperatures will rise particularly in western Greece, while northern winds will continue to blow across the country and locally reach 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.
Thursday forecast
Thursday will be generally clear, with some temporary cloud cover developing around the mountains of western and northern mainland Greece during the afternoon. Local showers are possible in those areas.
Visibility will be locally reduced in southern areas during the morning.
Winds will blow from northerly directions at 3 to 5 Beaufort, reaching locally 6 Beaufort in the Aegean.
Temperatures will rise, particularly in the west. Highs will reach 36 to 37 C and locally 38 C on the mainland. Temperatures will reach 33 to 34 C in the Ionian islands, 31 to 32 C in the Cyclades and Crete, and locally 35 to 36 C in the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.
Regional forecast
Macedonia and Thrace: Mostly clear, with temporary cloud cover developing over mountainous areas during the afternoon and a chance of local showers. Temperatures will range from 19 to 35 C, reaching locally 36 to 37 C in Central Macedonia.
Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Central Greece and Western Peloponnese: Mostly clear, with temporary afternoon cloud cover over mountainous areas, particularly in the north, where local showers are possible. Temperatures will range from 21 to 34 C, reaching 36 to 37 C locally on the mainland.
Thessaly, Eastern Central Greece, Evia and Eastern Peloponnese: Mostly clear, with temporary cloud cover over mainland mountains in the afternoon and a chance of local showers in the mountains of Thessaly. Temperatures will range from 20 to 37 C, locally reaching 38 C.
Cyclades and Crete: Mostly clear, with some temporary morning cloud cover in the Cyclades. Northerly winds will reach 4 to 5 Beaufort and locally 6 Beaufort in the Cyclades. Temperatures will reach 30 C, with Crete locally reaching 31 to 32 C.
Eastern Aegean islands and Dodecanese: Mostly clear, with northerly winds of 4 to 5 Beaufort and locally 6 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 22 to 35 C, reaching locally 36 C in the Dodecanese.
Attica: Mostly clear, with northerly to northeasterly winds of 3 to 4 Beaufort, reaching up to 5 Beaufort in the east. Temperatures will range from 21 to 35-36 C.
Thessaloniki: Mostly clear, with temporary afternoon cloud cover over nearby mountains. Winds will be variable at 2 to 3 Beaufort, temporarily shifting south during the afternoon. Temperatures will reach 34 to 35 C.
Friday brings further warming
On Friday, Aug. 21, mostly clear weather will continue, although cloud cover will temporarily increase over the mountains of western mainland Greece during the afternoon, with local rain or showers possible.
Northerly winds will reach 3 to 4 Beaufort in the west and 3 to 5 Beaufort in the east, locally reaching 6 Beaufort.
Temperatures will rise further, reaching 37 to 38 C and locally 39 C on the mainland. Highs will reach 34 to 36 C in the Ionian islands, 29 to 30 C in the Cyclades, 33 to 34 C in Crete, and 36 to locally 37 C in the eastern Aegean islands and Dodecanese.
Weekend outlook
On Saturday, Aug. 22, conditions will remain mostly clear, with temporary cloud cover over mainland mountain areas during the afternoon and a chance of local showers. Morning visibility will be locally reduced in western areas.
Northerly to northwesterly winds will reach 3 to 5 Beaufort, gradually reaching locally 6 Beaufort in the west. Temperatures will rise slightly further.
On Sunday, Aug. 23, mostly clear conditions will continue, with temporary afternoon cloud cover over mainland areas. Local showers are expected, while isolated thunderstorms may develop over mountainous areas.
Morning visibility will again be locally reduced in western Greece. Northerly to northwesterly winds will reach 4 to 5 Beaufort in the west and 4 to 6 Beaufort in the east. Temperatures are not expected to change significantly.
