What To Know About Athens’ Metro Closing Early

Evening disruptions will affect central stations as rail upgrades and 5G installation force earlier shutdowns, with replacement buses deployed to maintain passenger service.

Temporary service changes will take effect on Athens Metro Line 2 starting Tuesday night, as authorities carry out rail replacement works and install a 5G network across the system.

The disruptions will impact the central section between Attiki and Panepistimio stations, with several stops closing significantly earlier than usual. From April 21 to April 23, and again from April 26 to April 30, stations including Attiki, Larissa Station, Metaxourgeio, Omonia, and Panepistimio will shut down at 9:40 p.m.—approximately two and a half hours ahead of the normal closing time.

Despite the changes, Omonia and Attiki stations will remain operational for Line 1, which runs between Kifissia and Piraeus.

During the affected hours, Line 2 trains will operate only on two separate sections: from Anthoupoli to Sepolia in the west, and from Syntagma to Elliniko in the south.

Last train departures

The final trains before station closures will depart as follows:

  • From Sepolia to Elliniko at 9:30 p.m.
  • From Attiki to Elliniko at 9:32 p.m.
  • From Larissa Station to Elliniko at 9:33 p.m.
  • From Metaxourgeio to Elliniko at 9:34 p.m.
  • From Omonia to Elliniko at 9:36 p.m.

  • In the opposite direction:

  • From Panepistimio to Anthoupoli at 9:43 p.m.
  • From Omonia to Anthoupoli at 9:44 p.m.
  • From Metaxourgeio to Anthoupoli at 9:46 p.m.
  • From Larissa Station to Anthoupoli at 9:47 p.m.
  • From Attiki to Anthoupoli at 9:49 p.m.

To accommodate passengers traveling through the closed central segment, the Athens Urban Transport Organization will operate a temporary express bus service, Line X18.

The X18 route will connect Syntagma and Agios Antonios metro stations, covering key stops along the disrupted corridor, including Panepistimio, Omonia, Metaxourgeio, and Larissa Station. Additional temporary stops will be introduced to improve accessibility during the works.
Authorities advise commuters to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during the affected dates, as evening services across central Athens will be significantly altered.
