Wildfire Breaks Out in Fthiotida, 112 Emergency Alert Sounds

Firefighters and 11 aircraft battle a forest fire near Kalapodi as emergency alerts urge nearby residents to stay ready

A wildfire broke out in a rural, wooded area near Kalapodi in Fthiotida, triggering an immediate response from the Fire Service.

According to the Fire Brigade, as of Wednesday afternoon, July 1, a total of 56 firefighters are on the ground, working with three ground teams from the 4th Special Firefighting Unit and 16 vehicles. In the air, 9 fixed-wing aircraft and 2 helicopters are dropping water, with one aircraft coordinating the overall operation.

Water tanker trucks from local municipal authorities have also joined the effort, reinforcing ground crews. Firefighters are continuing to work on containing the blaze to keep it from reaching populated areas.

An emergency alert urged residents of the local communities of Sfaka and Zeli to remain on standby, while also telling the public to follow instructions from the authorities.
