Fire crews remain on alert after a wildfire broke out in the early hours of Monday on Mount Parnitha, a protected lightly forested mountain range located just north of Athens. The fire ignited near the Bafi mountain refuge, deep within the forested core of the Parnitha National Park, triggering a rapid response from emergency services.

Prompt Response Contained the Fire

According to the Hellenic Fire Service, the blaze was quickly brought under partial control, thanks in large part to favorable weather conditions, with light winds helping to limit its spread. The fire’s location within dense forest made the operation particularly sensitive, as the area is considered a critical natural reserve with rich biodiversity.

Efforts to suppress the fire involved a large ground force of 85 firefighters, including five specialized foot patrol units from the 1st Special Unit for Forest Operations (EMODE), and 23 fire engines. Local municipal water tankers and volunteers also provided crucial assistance at the scene.
