Crete is facing severe weather as strong, gusty winds sweep across the island, causing significant damage to crops and greenhouses. The storm, which began early Wednesday, has disrupted daily life and prompted safety measures in several communities.
According to Greece’s National Meteorological Service, winds in parts of the island have reached up to 9 on the Beaufort scale, making conditions particularly hazardous. The area around Ierapetra has been especially hard hit, with numerous greenhouses reporting extensive structural damage.
School Closures in Response to Storms
In the region of Ano Vianno, a combination of power outages and low temperatures has forced local authorities to close schools for the day. Mayor Pavlos Baritakis announced that instruction is suspended from 10:00 a.m. until the end of the school day for all educational institutions in the area.
Impact on Agriculture
Local farmers report heavy losses as wind and cold weather have destroyed parts of greenhouse operations and outdoor crops. The storm adds to ongoing challenges for the region’s agricultural sector, which relies heavily on greenhouse cultivation for key produce.
