A 32-year-old woman died early Wednesday, Sept. 23, after a fire broke out in her home in Vitoli, in the municipality of Makrakomi in central Greece.
The blaze started shortly after 2 a.m. in an annex room of the house, which was almost completely destroyed by the flames.
According to local news outlet LamiaReport, a witness said the woman had cooked a meal earlier in the evening. It remains unclear whether the fire started from a cooking pot or from another cause.
Neighbors found the woman unconscious and pulled her from the house. She had no burns on her body, which suggests she died of asphyxiation from thick smoke.
The family’s small dog also died. It appears to have been trapped inside the room and overcome by the fumes.
A large firefighting force responded to the scene. The fire service’s investigative unit has opened an inquiry into the exact cause of the blaze. The woman’s body will be sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
