Μake us preferred on Google A firefighter was killed on Rhodes on Tuesday while taking part in an operation to assist two hikers who had called for help in a remote area of the island.
The incident occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. near Sianna, a village in western Rhodes, according to local newspaper Rodiaki.
The firefighter, who was based in the wider area, was dispatched after the hikers, described as tourists, requested assistance. While attempting to reach them, he fell from a significant height and suffered fatal injuries, according to the initial reports.
A drone patrolling the area was the first to locate the firefighter following the fall. According to public broadcaster ERT, Fire Service crews are on their way to the site to recover the firefighter
The head of Greece’s Fire Service has ordered a formal administrative inquiry into the incident, following instructions from Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas. The inquiry will examine the circumstances and causes of the firefighter’s death during the rescue operation in the Sideritissa gorge on Rhodes.
