Woman Defends Partner In Domestic Abuse Case

A 40-year-old woman hospitalized after a brutal beating in Koropi insists her partner — now in custody — is innocent, claiming memory loss and describing their bond as one “of love.”

A 40-year-old woman who was severely beaten in her home in Koropi, a suburb southeast of Athens, has spoken publicly for the first time, saying she does not believe her 50-year-old partner, who has been jailed pending trial, was responsible for the attack.

Speaking from her hospital bed with visible facial injuries, the woman — identified as Agnes — told Greece’s Mega TV program Live News that she remembers little of the incident due to memory loss. “I still don’t remember clearly what happened,” she said. “I don’t think it was him who attacked me.”

Police have charged her partner as the alleged perpetrator, but Agnes maintains he may have found her after the attack. “Maybe it was the neighbors,” she added, claiming she sometimes heard them complaining about her smoking outside at night.

Despite her condition, Agnes described the man accused of assaulting her as part of a “normal family.” “We have problems like everyone, but we are a family. We have a relationship of love,” she said, adding that she does not think his imprisonment is fair and that she hopes her memory will return soon.

The woman’s health is reportedly improving, and she is being cared for by her father, a well-known Lithuanian psychiatrist specializing in family and sexual education. Her two young children are currently being treated at a children’s hospital.

Agnes expressed deep concern for her children, saying, “I’ve never been apart from them since they were born. I just want us to be together again — my children need me, and I need them.”

She also acknowledged that her relationship had seen arguments in the past, including one incident in 2023, but denied that violence was a regular occurrence. “We are parents, raising children together. We don’t have a perfect relationship, but we have love. Physical fights are not common,” she said.

However, she admitted that her partner had hit her before. “Yes, when something like that happens, you say no and goodbye,” she told reporters, suggesting she had previously left him after a violent dispute.

Meanwhile, the 50-year-old man insists he is innocent, claiming he found Agnes already injured when he returned home. “I was coming back from the airport. When I entered the house, I saw her hurt and called the police immediately,” he said, adding that he even photographed the scene as evidence. “I didn’t do this. I would never hurt her or the child.”
