An oxidized grenade believed to date from World War II was discovered Friday morning on a sidewalk in Rafina, a coastal town east of Athens.

The device was found at the intersection of Iroon Polytechniou and Velouchioti streets, according to authorities.

Area cordoned off

Following the discovery, authorities sealed off the area as a precaution.

Personnel from the Greek Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion were dispatched to the scene to safely remove and neutralize the grenade.

The device was subsequently handled as part of the authorities’ procedures for unexploded ordnance.
