A World War II-era Italian shell discovered yesterday in Pefki has been safely removed following a carefully coordinated military operation early Thursday morning, March 26, 2026.
According to reports, the 11- and 12-year-old children moved the shell to show their parents, unknowingly increasing the risk of a serious accident. Alarmed, one parent quickly called the authorities, and a bomb disposal team from the Greek Land Minefield Clearance Battalion arrived promptly to secure the site.
At around 8 a.m., a specialized team from the Greek Land Minefield Clearance Battalion carried out the defusal and removal operation. Authorities stressed that, despite the temporary alarm, there was no immediate danger to residents, provided safety protocols were observed.
Officials described the operation as particularly complex due to the shell’s age and instability, highlighting the challenges of safely dealing with unexploded ordnance from past conflicts.
