Olympiacos FC qualified for the next round of UEFA Champions League play on Wednesday in dramatic fashion, beating Ajax away in Amsterdam by 2-1.
The “Reds” made a spectacular appearance at the sold-out Johan Cruyff ArenA during the eighth and last week of play in the League Phase.

The Jose Luis Mendilibar-coached Greek Super League champions went ahead in the 52nd minute on a low shot inside the box by Gelson Martins, only to see the legendary Dutch side equalize with Kasper Dolberg’s penalty in the 69th minute.

Santiago Hezze scored the game-winner with a header in the 79th minute.

Meanwhile, defender Panagiotis Retsos swatted away a ball headed into the Olympiacos net last in the game to ensure the win.

The win in Amsterdam left the Piraeus side with 11 points, and 18th on the Champions League standings, mainly thanks to three wins in their final three games.

Ajax, meanwhile, are knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after finishing with just six points and in a disappointing 32nd place.

Olympiacos and the club’s millions of fans will learn their next opponent – either Atalanta or Bayer Leverkusen – for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase on Friday, during a draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

The games will be played on Feb. 17/18 and 24/25, with Olympiacos’ first game to take place at the Karaiskakis Stadium.
