Μake us preferred on Google Katerina Kontochristopoulou made history at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, winning the first gold medal for Greek fencing in the competition.
The Greek athlete, coached by Elli Tsolakidou, claimed first place in the foil event after defeating Egypt’s Sara Amr Hossny 15-13 in the final.
Kontochristopoulou made a strong start to the final, taking the lead from the outset and maintaining her advantage over her opponent until the final point to secure first place and the gold medal.
On her way to the medal, Kontochristopoulou first won all three of her pool bouts, defeating Egypt’s Sara Amr Hossny 5-3, France’s Constance Catarzi 5-1 and Tunisia’s Nourane B’chir 5-4. She then advanced to the main draw, where she defeated Croatia’s Dorja Blazic 15-13 in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, she overcame Italy’s Francesca Palumbo 15-8, before defeating Spain’s Ariadna Tucker 15-11 in the semifinals. The Greek fencer took the lead from the beginning, withstood the Spaniard’s comeback attempt and, with crucial points late in the bout, secured her place in the final, where she ultimately won the gold medal.
