Rafael Pagonis has made Greece proud once again. The 13-year-old Greek tennis sensation is officially the new U14 European Champion, following a commanding performance in the final held in the Czech Republic, on Sunday, July 27.
Pagonis overcame Dutch opponent Lawrence Drijver with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory, showing poise, maturity, and skill beyond his years. His triumph adds yet another trophy to his fast-growing collection—this being his sixth title of the season—and further cements his place among the rising stars of world tennis.
The young Greek didn’t waste time in the opening set, dominating play to take it 6-1. Drijver responded in the second, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Although Pagonis mounted a brief comeback to close the gap to 5-3, the Dutch player held on to level the match with a 6-3 second-set win.
But in the decisive third set, Pagonis displayed remarkable composure. Correcting the errors that cost him the second, he elevated his game at crucial moments and sealed the match—and the title—with a convincing 6-2 finish.
This latest achievement comes hot on the heels of his run to the Wimbledon U14 final just days ago, where he fell in three sets to Germany’s Moritz Freitag. In a twist of fate, Pagonis avenged that loss by eliminating Freitag in the semifinals en route to his European crown.
Final Score: 6-1, 3-6, 6-2
