The investigation behind the headlines
The case concerns suspected match-fixing and bribery involving people connected to the Hellenic Basketball Federation, refereeing officials and a businessman who is also a former athlete. On Wednesday Greek authorities issued six arrest warrants, including one for Liolios, following a confidential investigation led by sports prosecutor Apostolos Grammenos.
According to media reports, the investigation began after complaints about the operation of the federation and its president. Witness testimony and documentary material subsequently supported allegations of match-fixing. Two witnesses were considered particularly significant because they reportedly provided first-hand information about games in which bribery was alleged to have occurred.
The case file reportedly includes messages and other material relating to suspected manipulation across several levels of basketball, from youth and school competitions to the top division. Approximately 50 matches, including one played abroad, are reportedly being examined, with the period under scrutiny extending from 2016 to 2026.
Investigators also reportedly found a large sum of cash during searches. Greek media reported that approximately 820,000 euros was discovered at the home of a referee in Katerini, although the circumstances and significance of the money remain part of the investigation.
