Lost on the Railway Tracks

The poem “Lost on the Railway Tracks”, inspired by the Tempi tragedy, captures the innocence and pain of the victims. It was set to music and performed by female students of the Greek Lyceum at a protest gathering in Munich, showing how poetry can become the voice of the youth.

Mother, I’m coming, without hesitation,
we board the carriages for this journey.

There are many people; I’m going to sleep,
I’ll call you when I arrive.

Don’t worry, I’ll be safe,
I’m with the students from my school.

The journey begins, without stopping,
Mother, I’m coming, and I can’t wait.

Mother, I’ve missed your cooking,
your voice, and your warm embrace.

I can’t wait to come close to you and see you.
Alright, I’ll leave you now, I’m going to rest.

I’ll be there soon, I’ll see you shortly,
the journey has gone well so far.

The train, after all, wasn’t bad,
but my mind keeps running back to you.

Mom, we’ve crashed, I’m scared, Mom,
everyone here is screaming—what should I do, Mom?

Mom, I can’t breathe, my heart hurts,
why did I get on this train, Mom?

Mom, this was my last journey,
they’re suffocating me, Mom, I have no hope, Mom.

I love you, Mom—take care of Dad,
forgive me for getting into the wrong carriage, Mom,
remember me, Mom!
