Residents of Halkida, a city northeast of Athens, were shocked on Sunday afternoon when a group of young motorcyclists blocked the city’s main bridge to hold illegal street races in front of dozens of spectators.

The High Bridge of Halkida, a key traffic link connecting parts of the city, was closed for around 15 minutes, trapping numerous motorists in long queues. Witnesses said the riders sped across the bridge in dangerous bursts of acceleration as onlookers cheered from the sidelines.

Drivers Left Stuck and Frustrated

Dozens of drivers were unable to move their vehicles, creating scenes of confusion and frustration. Some motorists called the Halkida Traffic Police, demanding immediate action to reopen the bridge and stop the illegal event.

However, according to complaints from locals, no police units arrived at the scene either during or after the races. The lack of visible enforcement sparked anger among residents, who have long voiced concerns about reckless driving and illegal races in the area.

Riders Flee Before Police Arrival

After several minutes, the motorcyclists abruptly ended the races and dispersed, leaving traffic to resume. No injuries or accidents were reported, but the incident reignited debate over road safety and law enforcement in Greek cities, particularly during weekends when such gatherings are more common.

Authorities have yet to issue a statement on the incident or announce any investigation into the organizers of the races.
