At least three people have died and 34 others were injured following a serious train derailment in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The accident occurred earlier this evening near Zwiefalten-Dorf in the Biberach district, when two carriages of a Deutsche Bahn regional express train derailed.

According to a report by Schwäbische Zeitung, rescue and fire crews were quickly dispatched to the remote crash site, where video footage showed responders working intensively to access passengers trapped in the overturned cars. Distressing sounds, including loud cries, could be heard at the scene.

One section of the train was seen lying on its side, with the roof of a carriage torn open. The derailed cars ended up scattered along a forested slope, wedged among trees.

A spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn confirmed the derailment occurred near Riedlingen, noting that approximately 100 people were on board the train at the time of the incident. “At least three passengers have been injured, but it is currently not possible to provide information on the severity of their injuries,” the spokesperson said.

The accident took place at around 18:10 local time. A police representative added that the exact cause of the derailment remains unknown. Severe storms and heavy rainfall have been affecting the region in recent hours, raising questions about whether the weather may have played a role. However, no official link has yet been established.

“There is no clarity at this stage on whether the derailment was caused by the weather or by another factor, such as fallen trees on the tracks,” said a representative from the Federal Police. “The exact causes of the accident are currently under investigation.”
