European leaders who took part in talks in Berlin said in a joint statement they welcomed what they described as “significant progress in President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

According to the statement, participants — which included U.S. negotiators led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — agreed to work alongside Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy “to achieve a durable peace that safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and European security.”

They said the objective was to provide “strong security guarantees and measures to support Ukraine’s economic recovery.”

The statement also included a key caveat, stressing that “international borders must not be changed by force,” and reaffirmed that any decisions on territorial issues must be made by the Ukrainian people, and only when “robust security guarantees” are in place.

The statement read that any territorial concessions would only be made with the consent of the Ukrainain people.

Earlier on Monday a Ukrainian delegation led by President Zelensky met with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with Zelensky describing it “not easy”.
