Greece’s foreign ministry on Friday evening issued a statement regarding the participants of the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” who were safely transported to Crete hours earlier.
According to the announcement, 176 citizens of both European Union member states and third countries who participated in the initiative were disembarked at a port on the southern side of Lasithi prefecture.
Of these, 31 individuals were taken for first aid to a nearby health clinic in Sitia, while the rest were transferred to Heraklion Airport. From there, their departure from Greece began, under the responsibility of consular officials representing their respective countries.
The operation was coordinated by the ministry, in cooperation with the Hellenic Coast Guard, the armed forces and the Crete regional authority. At the same time, there was continuous communication with foreign diplomatic missions in Greece and competent European authorities.
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis held talks with his counterparts on the issue, who expressed their gratitude to Greece for undertaking and successfully completing the operation.
