Israel has officially recognized Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The announcement was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, referring to Somaliland as a self-declared republic that separated from Somalia but had not previously received international recognition.

The decision immediately drew criticism from several nations. The foreign ministers of Somalia, Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti condemned Israel’s recognition, emphasizing their support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

According to statements released following discussions among the four foreign ministers, the recognition was universally rejected and condemned. Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that its minister had consulted with counterparts from Somalia, Turkey, and Djibouti, reaffirming their collective stance against the move.

This historic decision by Israel marks a significant shift in international relations for Somaliland, which has long sought recognition as an independent state while maintaining stability and functioning governance in a region historically affected by conflict.
