Greek-language media and social were ablaze on Monday with a claim that the commander of the US Army’s famed “Delta Force”, which led the raid that abducted Nicholas Maduro from his fortified compound in Caracas, was of Greek origin, due to the name cited.

A post on X by independent journalist author Seth Harp – which was later deleted – identified the top officer as Col. Chris Countouriotis.

Harp, a vocal critic of the military operation, received an avalanche of opprobrium after making the alleged revelation.

Among others, a brief biography on Countouriotis in a military studies-related webpage was removed on Monday, with only a picture along with the name and rank left.
