Air travel across Europe is facing significant disruption as Lufthansa pilots begin a 48-hour strike, leading to widespread flight cancellations and delays on Monday and Tuesday.

The industrial action began at midnight and is expected to impact operations across Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and CityLine, according to the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit. Pilots at Eurowings are also participating in the strike for Monday only.

Widespread disruption for passengers

Passengers are being warned to expect cancellations and major schedule changes throughout the two-day period, as airlines attempt to manage reduced staffing levels.

Only flights to the Middle East are exempt from the strike due to ongoing regional tensions, according to the union.

This marks the fourth strike action by pilots this year, as negotiations continue over a new collective labor agreement.

Recent wave of aviation strikes

The disruption comes just days after a separate strike by cabin crew, which resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations and further strain on airline operations.
