U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened military action against Colombia, saying such an operation “sounds good to me.” Speaking aboard Air Force One, he described Colombia as “very sick, too, run by a sick man, who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States,” an apparent reference to President Gustavo Petro. When asked directly whether the U.S. would pursue a military operation, Trump replied, “It sounds good to me.”

The comments followed the audacious U.S. raid that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas on Saturday. Maduro, 63, was flown to New York and is being held in a federal detention center ahead of a Monday court appearance on drug-trafficking charges. He was indicted in 2020 for narco-terrorism conspiracy and has denied all wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, the Cuban government reported that 32 of its citizens were killed during the U.S. operation. Havana said the deceased were members of the Cuban armed forces and intelligence agencies who had provided security for Maduro. The country declared two days of national mourning on January 5 and 6. Details on the exact circumstances and number of Cuban personnel involved remain unclear.
Trump and his administration have also made broader comments about potential future involvement in Cuba, citing concerns over the country’s political stability.
