The United States has informed the United Nations Security Council that President Donald Trump is determined to secure a peace agreement to end the war between Russia and Ukraine by August 8 at the latest, according to a senior U.S. diplomat.

“Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and a lasting peace. The time has come for an agreement. President Trump has made clear that this must be achieved by August 8. The United States is preparing to implement additional measures to ensure peace,” senior U.S. diplomat John Kelley told the 15-member Council, without specifying the nature of the measures.

The U.S. President had previously announced a 50-day deadline earlier in July for ending the conflict, but moved to shorten it last week. Speaking from Scotland during meetings with European leaders, the U.S. president expressed frustration with the continuation of hostilities and issued a tighter ultimatum to Moscow, demanding progress within 10 to 12 days.

The day after, Trump warned that the U.S. would begin imposing tariffs and other punitive measures against Russia “10 days from now” unless the Kremlin shows concrete steps toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov issued a terse response on Tuesday: “We have taken note of President Trump’s statement. The special military operation continues,” he said, using Moscow’s official terminology for the conflict.

“We remain committed to the peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and to safeguard our interests throughout this settlement,” Peskov added.
