Up to 3.2 million people have been displaced within Iran since the conflict began on February 28, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which warned on Thursday that the number could continue to rise as fighting persists.

The estimate is based on preliminary assessments of uprooted households conducted by the U.N. refugee agency. The mass displacement highlights the growing humanitarian impact of the conflict, which has forced millions of people to flee their homes in search of safety.

Humanitarian Concerns Growing

The agency cautioned that the current figures may only represent the early stages of the crisis.

“This figure is likely to continue rising as hostilities persist, marking a worrying escalation in humanitarian needs,” UNHCR said in a statement.
