Utah prosecutors unveiled seven charges on Tuesday against Tyler Robinson in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and formally announced they would seek the death penalty.

The charges include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Robinson’s DNA was found on the trigger of a rifle used in the Sept. 10 shooting, according to the charging documents, and he is accused of urging his roommate to delete incriminating messages and to not speak with investigators.

Robinson, 22 years old, confessed to his parents and his roommate that he had killed Kirk with his grandfather’s rifle, the charging documents said. Robinson allegedly told his parents that “there is too much evil and the guy spreads too much hate,” according to the court filings.

Robinson is expected to make his first court appearance via remote video Tuesday afternoon, days after a fast-moving manhunt ended when his family helped deliver him to the custody of law enforcement.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox previously detailed how investigators received a tip Thursday evening that Robinson had indicated to his father that he had killed Kirk. That information led them to review video footage that they thought confirmed Robinson’s presence on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on the morning of the killing. They also interviewed a family member and his roommate, who showed them messages linked to Robinson discussing a rifle left wrapped in a towel and engraving bullets.

Law-enforcement officials had recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle and ammunition inscribed with messages from a wooded area near the university campus. The engravings included one that said “hey fascist! CATCH!,” along with other messages and symbols.

Cox previously said Robinson was indoctrinated with leftist ideology, a departure from his conservative upbringing in a heavily Mormon community in southwestern Utah. The former 4.0 high-school student was raised by Republican parents and grew up hunting and using firearms.

Robinson’s roommate had been cooperating with investigators and didn’t have knowledge of the shooting, according to Cox. The roommate was Robinson’s romantic partner “who is transitioning from male to female,” the governor said.

Kirk, 31, was credited with attracting young voters to the Republican party. In under a decade, he went from a political unknown to a powerful force in the MAGA movement by giving provocative speeches and debating students on college campuses.

The killing has become a political lightning rod. President Trump blamed the rhetoric of “the radical left” for contributing to Kirk’s death, saying it compared him to Nazis, mass murderers and criminals. Since the slaying, the White House has been weighing executive actions that would target liberal groups , including one ordering the review of the tax-exempt status of left-leaning nonprofit groups. Workers across the U.S. have been fired for mocking Kirk’s killing . Many of them had been flagged by online activists who have been collecting names of commenters.
