Μake us preferred on Google Greek pop singer Giorgos Mazonakis, 54, died suddenly on Wednesday, with media reports citing cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
His passing reportedly occurred at the central Athens hospital of Elpis after he was transported to the facility in critical condition from a private physician’s office.
Mazonakis was one of the most popular Greek performers of his generation, building a career spanning more than three decades and becoming known for his distinctive stage presence and personal performance style.
Born March 4, 1972, in Nikaia, a working-class district close to the port city of Piraeus, in the greater Athens agglomeration, Mazonakis began performing professionally as a teenager and made his recording debut in the early 1990s. He went on to establish himself as one of the leading figures of the Greek popular music scene, combining traditional popular influences with contemporary pop and dance sounds.
His career included numerous successful albums and collaborations with prominent Greek songwriters and performers.
Mazonakis had also developed a strong following among ethnic Greeks abroad, performing extensively in Germany, Australia and North America.
His international appearances included concerts in New York, New Jersey, Atlantic City and Chicago, as well as a series of performances in Australia.
In December 2009, he performed in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, while in October 2012, he returned to North America for a six-city tour after an absence of about seven years, performing in Los Angeles, Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, Montreal and Atlantic City.
Mazonakis later returned to Canada, performing in Vancouver in 2018.
His overseas concerts helped establish him as a prominent live performer among the Greek diaspora.
All in all, Mazonakis remained an active presence on the Greek music scene until his passing, marking 33 years of his career with major live performances.
