Civil defense authorities issued a severe weather warning to residents in the central Macedonia region on Thursday evening due to a series of heavy thunderstorms in the area.

Heavy rainfall – mostly welcomed after less than average precipitation over the past year – fell on much of the mainland during the day, with the same forecast expected for Friday.

The small Ionian Sea Isle of Paxoi, in fact, recorded nearly 100 millimeters of rainfall on the day.

The worst-hit area was near the town of Aitoliko (Etoliko), in Aitoloakarnania prefecture, along western Greece, with torrential rains causing damages and flooding. More thunderstorms for forecast for the same region on Friday.
