Greek meteorologists are warning of exceptionally dangerous weather conditions on Wednesday, April 1, with civil protection authorities placing the country on high alert and the state emergency mechanism on standby. Seven regions have been placed on Red Code status.
According to the METEOALARM European warning map, nearly half of Greece is under red alert, with the remaining regions on orange and yellow warnings.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection activated Red Code mobilization status on Tuesday for Wednesday, April 1 and Thursday April 2, for the following regions: Attica, Central Greece, Thessaly, including the Sporades, the Peloponnese, the South Aegean, and the regional units of Imathia and Pieria in Central Macedonia.
Red Warning for Attica
For Attica and other red-alert zones, authorities issued the following guidance: “Red warning — locally intense rainfall. Possible precipitation exceeding 80 millimeters. TAKE ACTION to protect yourself and follow the advice of competent authorities. Extensive flooding and a significant risk to life. Possibility of area evacuations. Serious disruption to transport, possible interruptions to communications, electricity and water supply. Dangerous driving conditions due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.”
The Ministry of Civil Protection has been placed on continuous alert status, with back-to-back meetings underway to coordinate the state response.
The Risk Assessment Committee convened on Tuesday morning, and a decision has already been taken to activate the 112 emergency alert system in red-zone areas where dangerous conditions are expected to develop. The committee will reconvene on Wednesday morning for a further assessment.
