Greek Shipping Ministry Issues Advisory Regarding Strait of Hormuz

Greek-owned vessels advised to exercise maximum caution when sailing through the critical sea lane

Greek-owned and managed vessels sailing through the Strait of Hormuz connecting the Gulf with the Arabian Sea should be on high alert due to escalating military activity in the wider region, Greece’s shipping ministry advised on Tuesday.

According to reports, a notice from the ministry refers to a recent attempted boarding by armed individuals – transported by two small boats – of a freighter transiting the strait. The advisory also cites increased levels of “electromagnetic interference” affecting vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz, the northern end of which is Iranian territory.

Iran Temporarily Closes Strait of Hormuz

Meanwhile, a few hours after negotiations began in Geneva this week between representatives of Washington and Tehran, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that several sections of the Strait of Hormuz would be closed for several hours due to “security precautions,” as the Western-sanctioned “Revolutionary Guards” conduct live-fire military exercises along the world’s most vital oil export route.
