Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) carried out an extensive” enforcement campaign” on Greek islands and other popular tourist destinations. The inspections revealed widespread tax violations, with an overwhelming four out of ten businesses found to be breaking the law.
Specifically, inspectors conducted 2,252 audits, identifying violations at 732 businesses, for a non-compliance rate of 37.42%.
The inspections uncovered a total of 13,287 tax violations. Authorities also identified €545,573 in undeclared revenue, while the fines imposed exceeded €1 million, reaching €1,023,281.
In the case of the severest violations, the authorities temporarily closed businesses (“lockdowns” or “sealed premises”).
AADE has been stepping up their enforcement campaigns over the past few years, aided by online digital platforms and programs, and more frequent on-site audits.
