An incendiary attack targeted the political office of Migration & Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris in Athens’ upscale Kolonaki district at around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, causing damage to the entrance of the building.

The perpetrators placed an improvised incendiary device consisting of two gas canisters at the entrance to the apartment building housing the office. The explosion damaged the main entrance door and shattered windows.

Political parties unanimously condemned the attack.

Video footage obtained by the Mega Non Stop television program shows the suspects shortly before the explosion. The individuals, whose faces were concealed by masks, appear to have taken advantage of Halloween to disguise themselves while carrying the device in backpacks.

They left the device at the building’s entrance and walked away shortly before it exploded.

The attack follows a series of incendiary attacks targeting members of New Democracy (ND), the ruling center-right governing, last July in Thessaloniki. Three attacks were carried out within approximately 17 minutes against properties associated with three ND cadres. The third attack caused a fire that spread to nearby vehicles, seriously injuring Aphrodite Nestora’s mother, who later died in hospital.

Investigators examining the July attacks looked into possible links to anarchist and anti-authoritarian circles in Thessaloniki. Previous attacks targeting ND politicians and public officials have also been attributed to or claimed by groups operating within the broader anarchist and anti-state milieu.
