Greece Approves 20,870 Public-Sector Hires for 2027

The government says recruitment will focus on health care, defense, security, local government, transportation, universities, justice and tax administration, with 173,496 positions approved since 2020

Greece’s Cabinet has approved 20,870 new hires of permanent staff and employees working under paid mandates in the public sector for 2027.

According to the Interior Ministry’s political leadership, the recruitment plan will prioritize strengthening the National Health System, armed forces, security services, local government, transportation, public universities, the judiciary and the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

The annual recruitment plan continues a broader expansion of public-sector staffing approved since 2020.

Health care and defense

The health care sector will receive 4,650 positions, including 1,515 medical staff and 3,135 nurses and other personnel across Health Ministry facilities.

In national defense, the government approved the full request from military academies, totaling 1,489 positions, along with 1,000 professional soldiers. For the first time, the plan also includes a significant increase in teaching and research staff at military schools, with 102 positions.

The Ministry of Citizen Protection will receive 1,050 positions for police academies, including trainee police officers and deputy police officers, as well as 140 officer positions.

A further 151 positions will be added for security and external-guarding personnel at correctional facilities, in addition to the additional staffing approved during 2026.

Fire service and climate response

The government is also continuing to strengthen the Fire Service in response to climate-related challenges.

The recruitment plan fully approves the request for 330 positions at fire-service academies, while adding another 600 positions for general-duty firefighters.

Transportation and infrastructure

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will receive a total of 1,300 new positions, marking the first time the ministry has received an allocation of this size, according to the government.

The breakdown includes:

  • 582 positions at Greece’s railway operator OSE
  • 230 positions at O.SY., the company operating road-based public transportation
  • 135 positions at STASY, which operates fixed-track public transportation
  • 154 positions at the Civil Aviation Authority

The remaining positions will be distributed among other organizations supervised by the ministry.

Tax administration and justice

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will receive 1,000 new employees to strengthen Greece’s tax and revenue administration.

The justice sector will receive 592 positions in total. These include 95 judicial officers, 420 court employees, primarily court clerks, and 67 positions for the central judicial administration.

The government said the additional court staff is intended to support faster court operations.

Local government receives 3,845 positions

Local government will receive 3,845 positions across Greece’s first- and second-level local authorities.

The government described the allocation as an increase over last year’s initial distribution and one of the strongest increases since 2020.

The positions will cover a range of critical specialties across local government.

Universities and education

The education sector will receive 680 faculty positions at public universities, along with:

  • 94 positions for specialized teaching and research staff
  • 196 administrative positions at higher education institutions
  • 86 positions for university hospitals, including Aretaieio and Aiginiteio hospitals

Additional personnel will also be recruited at organizations supervised by the Education Ministry.

Social security and environmental services

The government approved the full recruitment request from e-EFKA, Greece’s main social security organization, providing 450 new positions.

The country’s forest services will receive 64 new positions, also representing the full number requested.

The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family will receive 310 positions to strengthen its services. Of these, 245 will be allocated to Social Welfare Centers and the Chronic Diseases Treatment Center of Evrytania.

The remaining positions will go to the National Foundation for the Deaf, the National Center for Social Research, the Center for Education and Rehabilitation for the Blind and other supervised organizations.

173,496 hires approved since 2020

The 20,870 positions approved for 2027 follow 152,626 public-sector hires approved for the period from 2020 through 2026.

That brings the total number of approved hires over the seven-year period to 173,496.

Of those positions, 28% are in education, 17% in health care, 12% in defense, 14% in local government and 7% in citizen protection.

Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios has previously said that a key priority is to cover the actual staffing needs of public services while speeding up appointment procedures.
