As Greece dispatches military assistance to Cyprus to support the island’s security, opposition parties are calling for an urgent political briefing on the rapidly evolving crisis in the Middle East and Greece’s stance.
Earlier, the minister of national defense said Greece was sending military aid to Cyprus. The move comes amid escalating tensions in the broader Middle East and growing concern over potential spillover effects in the Eastern Mediterranean.
PASOK Urges Immediate Update on Mideast Developments
The leader of PASOK, Greece’s main opposition party, called on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to immediately brief political party leaders on developments in the Middle East and outline the country’s priorities.
“The Middle East is once again on fire. The rapid developments and the prospect of further escalation are causing intense concern,” he said in a statement on social media.
He urged the prime minister to inform party chiefs about Greece’s position and strategic priorities in relation to unfolding events in the wider Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region.

SYRIZA Calls for Council of Political Leaders
Socrates Famellos, president of SYRIZA, also requested the convening of a Council of Political Leaders to shape a unified national line regarding the war and Greece’s stance.
Famellos criticized what he described as a foreign policy approach that frames Greece as a “predictable ally,” warning that such a strategy carries serious risks during a period of regional fluidity and destabilization.
He said Greece must align itself with peace and international law and avoid any military involvement in the Middle East crisis.
KKE Warns of Security Risks After KYSEA Decision
Dimitris Koutsoumbas, secretary-general of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), also raised concerns, warning of risks to Greece and its citizens following recent decisions by the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA).
In a letter to the speaker of Parliament and key ministers, he said that after the U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on U.S. bases in the region, a “very dangerous situation” is emerging that could lead to a broader war.
He argued that Greece is becoming deeply involved in U.S.-Israeli planning, highlighting the role of the Souda military base and pointing to extraordinary security measures for U.S. installations in Greece as evidence of heightened risk. He also cited dangers facing Greek citizens in Iran and neighboring countries, as well as Greek seafarers in the Persian Gulf, and called for an official briefing of Parliament.
