Skaramangas to Modernize Hellenic Navy MEKO Frigates

Skaramangas Shipyards will modernize the Hellenic Navy's MEKO frigates, integrating advanced electronic systems to boost fleet capabilities.

Skaramangas Shipyards is set to play a pivotal role in the modernization of the Hellenic Navy’s MEKO-class frigates following the signing of a contract with the Ministry of National Defence to carry out specialized shipbuilding and electromechanical work. The technically demanding program includes critical structural modifications required for the installation and secure integration of next-generation electronic systems, significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of the fleet.

The MEKO-class frigates were originally built at Skaramangas Shipyards, making the new contract a natural continuation of the shipyard’s longstanding contribution to major Hellenic Navy programs.

Under the agreement, the shipyard will undertake a complex package of work, including the removal of existing electronic equipment, the creation of new mounting positions for sensors, the installation of interface cabling linking the new systems with command consoles, and the comprehensive refurbishment of the Combat Information Center (CIC) and dedicated staff spaces aboard the vessels.

All work will be carried out in accordance with the highest military standards and technical specifications to ensure the safe integration and optimal performance of the new electronic systems.

Particular emphasis will be placed on synchronizing the shipyard activities with the delivery schedule of the electronic equipment, allowing the modernization program to progress efficiently while minimizing the time each frigate spends in the yard. This integrated approach is designed to preserve a high level of fleet availability throughout the upgrade program.
