An 18-year-old mother in Crete has admitted to hitting her 17-day-old baby in the head, in a case that began after the newborn was taken to a hospital with seizures.
The infant remains in a stable but critical condition in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a hospital in Heraklion.
The baby was taken to Chania General Hospital on September 13 after suffering seizures. Medical examinations found that the newborn had suffered a brain hemorrhage, leading to the child’s transfer to the Neonatal ICU in Heraklion.
Mother faces questioning
The 18-year-old woman, who turned 18 in March, was arrested and brought before an investigating magistrate in Chania.
She requested and was granted an extension to prepare her defense and is scheduled to provide her statement on Thursday, September 17.
The mother initially claimed that the baby had fallen from her arms. She later admitted that she had hit the infant in the head while in a distressed psychological state.
The infant continues to receive treatment in the Neonatal ICU, with the child’s condition described as stable but critical.
