Μake us preferred on Google An unexpected scene unfolded in central Athens when a pregnant woman gave birth inside a taxi while being rushed to Alexandra Maternity Hospital, Tuesday, July 28.
The taxi driver, Panagiotis, told Greece’s public broadcaster ERT that he quickly realized the woman was in an advanced stage of labor and called for assistance from the Greek Police. Before they could reach their destination, the baby was born in the back seat of the vehicle.
“When I turned around to look, I saw the baby’s head had already emerged. I was shocked, but I tried to remain calm,” the driver recalled.
With the assistance of a police patrol car and motorcycle officers, the taxi was escorted swiftly to Alexandra Hospital. The mother and newborn were handed over to medical staff, who confirmed that both were in good health.
Panagiotis described the experience as one of the most intense moments of his life, saying his greatest relief came when he heard the baby’s first cry.
“That was when a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. I will never forget it,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the police for their immediate response. “I simply did what I had to do, first and foremost as a human being,” the taxi driver said.
