Μake us preferred on Google The operation of up to 33 schools in Epirus, northwestern Greece, will be suspended due to a lack of students, according to a decision announced by the Regional Directorate of Education.
The measure affects 11 elementary schools and 22 kindergartens across the region’s four regional units and will take effect with the start of the new school year.
Schools affected across Epirus
The largest number of affected schools is in the regional unit of Arta, where 13 schools will suspend operations. The decision concerns seven elementary schools and six kindergartens.
In the regional unit of Ioannina, 11 schools will suspend operations, including four elementary schools and seven kindergartens.
In Thesprotia, the measure affects two kindergartens, while in Preveza, seven kindergartens will not operate during the new school year.
Overall, 33 school units across Epirus will remain closed because of insufficient student numbers.
The development highlights the significant decline in the region’s student population, particularly in smaller and mountainous areas, where declining enrollment has increasingly affected the operation of local schools.
