A six-year-old boy died on Thursday afternoon after he was found unconscious in the swimming pool of a private residence in Gialova, a coastal village in the extreme southwest Greece municipality of Pylos-Nestor.

According to initial information, the child was accompanying his 32-year-old mother, who was working as a cleaner at the two-story house. Under circumstances that remain under investigation, the boy is believed to have wandered away unnoticed while his mother was carrying out cleaning duties on the upper floor.

The mother later discovered the child unconscious in the pool and immediately alerted emergency services. Paramedics attempted to revive the boy by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before transporting him to the Pylos health center.

Despite sustained efforts by doctors and emergency responders, the child was pronounced dead at around 4:30 p.m. local time. His mother was reported to be in severe psychological distress following the incident.

The tragedy comes amid renewed concern in Greece over child safety around swimming pools following a series of fatal and near-fatal incidents over the past year. Several recent cases involving young children at private and hotel pools have reignited debate over supervision, safety measures and compliance with lifeguard requirements where mandated.
