Athens Buses Halt Service for Six Hours Amid Union Assembly

Public buses in the Greek capital stopped running from late morning to afternoon due to a union work stoppage, while regional KTEL routes continued to operate normally.

Public bus services in Athens were suspended for six hours on Wednesday, disrupting transportation across the city as workers took part in a union general assembly.

According to the Athens public transport authority (OASA), no bus routes operated between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. after the employees’ union announced a work stoppage to allow staff to attend its electoral and accountability general meeting. Normal service was expected to resume after 6:00 p.m., with the final departures before the stoppage taking place shortly before 10:00 a.m.

The work stoppage affected urban bus services run under OASA, the organization responsible for public transportation in the Athens metropolitan area. However, regional KTEL bus routes operating under the OASA network continued to run as scheduled, ensuring limited alternatives for passengers during the disruption.

OASA said that several suburban and intercity-style routes, mainly serving outer areas of the greater Athens region, were not affected by the stoppage and operated normally throughout the day.
