Klafthmonos Square, a historic public space in central Athens, has been renovated with nearly 2,000 new plants and more than 1,000 square meters of natural grass as part of the city’s efforts to improve its public spaces.
The work was carried out by the Athens Municipality’s Greenery Directorate from October 10 to 20, with the aim of improving both the square’s appearance and its functionality.
A total of 1,935 plants were added, including 30 trees, alongside the installation of 1,100 square meters of natural turf.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said the project had transformed the square, which thousands of people pass through every day.
“We planted nearly 2,000 plants, including 30 trees, and installed 1,100 square meters of grass,” Doukas said. “This is a significant intervention in the heart of the city, in a public space used daily by thousands of people. We are bringing more greenery and new life to Athens’ neighborhoods. And we will continue.”
New trees and flowering plants
The planting scheme includes 30 trees, among them pomegranate trees, cedar, trumpet trees, carob trees, bottlebrush trees, sweetgum trees and weeping mulberries.
The project also involved planting 668 shrubs and ornamental plants, including lavender, rosemary, oleander, dwarf bougainvillea, photinia and crape myrtle, as well as 237 seasonal plants, including begonias and cyclamens.
Trumpet trees, which originate in Central and South America, are among the new additions. They are known for their striking blooms, which bring vivid color to urban landscapes. Sweetgum trees were also included in the planting scheme.
Part of wider efforts to green Athens
Deputy Mayor for Environment and Green Spaces Georgios Apostolopoulos said the square’s renovation formed part of broader efforts to improve the city’s urban environment.
“In addition to the 14,000 new trees planted in less than three years and the five new parks we have created during our term, we are making Athens more beautiful in every way,” he said.
The renovation of Klafthmonos Square is part of the municipality’s ongoing work to maintain and upgrade public spaces across the Greek capital.
