Residents of the Nea Chora area of Chania, on the Greek island of Crete, discovered the body of a man floating in the sea shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, prompting an emergency response from local authorities.
Bystanders spotted the body and alerted authorities, after which two lifeguards recovered it from the water. The man, believed to be over 50 years old, has not yet been identified, according to initial reports.
Conditions in the water at the time were rough, with strong waves making swimming particularly hazardous. The beach’s official lifeguard service had not yet begun for the day, as coverage was not scheduled to start until 10:00 a.m.
Authorities in Crete are investigating the exact circumstances of the man’s death.
