A 17-year-old boy has been pronounced brain dead after falling from a hotel balcony in the Athens suburb of Chalandri early Friday morning.

The 17-year-old British tourist was standing on the balcony of a hotel in the area when, under circumstances that remain under investigation, he fell from the balcony at around 5:00 a.m.

The teenager sustained multiple injuries, although his fall was partially broken before he hit the ground. He was transported by ambulance to Athens’ Red Cross General Hospital.

The exact circumstances surrounding the teenager’s fall have not yet been determined. Initial reports suggest the incident was an accident.

According to reports, evidence gathered by police indicates that shortly before the incident, the 17-year-old and a friend had illegally purchased alcohol from the convenience kiosk.

The reports also state that the teenagers presented a fake driver’s license in order to complete the purchase.

The 36-year-old employee was arrested and faces charges of exposing another person to a life-threatening situation resulting in death, as well as violating Greece’s tobacco and alcohol laws.

The investigation by the relevant authorities into the exact circumstances of the fall remains ongoing.
