Cold Front from Balkans to Rain on Long Weekend

A sharp weather change is expected as a cold front from the Balkans moves into Greece, bringing thunderstorms, hail, lightning activity, strong winds and a temporary drop in temperatures before spring conditions return.

Greece is set for a significant shift in weather conditions as a cold front moving in from the Balkans is expected to bring thunderstorms, hail, and intense lightning activity from Thursday evening onwards, according to meteorological forecasts.

The change will mark a temporary end to the mild spring conditions currently experienced across the country, with unstable weather expected to dominate through the end of the week before a return to warmer conditions.

From spring warmth to stormy conditions

Until Thursday afternoon, weather across Greece will remain largely spring-like, with high temperatures and limited cloud cover. However, conditions are expected to deteriorate from the evening as the cold front moves southward, initially affecting coastal and island areas.

The most intense weather is expected to develop over parts of the Aegean Sea region, where thunderstorms may be accompanied by hail and frequent lightning.

Storms, winds and falling temperatures

From Friday through Saturday morning, unstable weather will spread across much of the country. Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in several regions, along with a noticeable drop in temperatures and strengthening northerly winds, particularly in the Aegean.

Wind gusts are forecast to reach strong levels, creating rougher sea conditions and further contributing to the autumn-like atmosphere despite the time of year.

Regional impact across the country

On Thursday, thunderstorms are expected mainly in northern and central regions, with the instability gradually expanding southwards on Friday. Areas including eastern mainland regions and parts of the Aegean are expected to be affected, while western areas are likely to see more limited impact.

By Friday, the unsettled weather will move further south, reaching parts of southern mainland regions and the central and southern Aegean, before gradually weakening.

Brief cold spell before improvement

Meteorologists describe the incoming system as a short-lived interruption to spring conditions, with cooler air, strong winds and scattered storms lasting until Saturday afternoon.

From Sunday onwards, weather conditions are expected to improve, with temperatures rising again and more stable spring weather returning across the country into the following week.
