A major police manhunt is underway in Athens after an 89-year-old man carried out two separate shootings Tuesday, injuring at least four people before disappearing.
The suspect, described as a scrap collector born in 1937, initially opened fire inside a building housing services of EFKA, Greece’s main social security agency, in the central Athens district of Kerameikos. One employee was shot in the leg, triggering panic among staff and visitors inside the busy public office.
Police launched a search operation after the suspect fled the scene armed with a shotgun. Despite the immediate response, he managed to evade capture.
Shortly afterward, the suspect reportedly traveled about 5 kilometers to Loukareos Street, near the Athens court complex, where he opened fire again outside the Court of First Instance. Three more people were injured in the second attack.
According to the media reports, the gunman then abandoned his shotgun at the scene and disappeared, prompting a renewed police alert across the city.
Authorities are investigating how he traveled between the two locations and managed to carry out a second attack even as a police manhunt was underway. The motive was not immediately clear.
