Μake us preferred on Google The Greek Coast Guard is searching for migrants south of the Greek island of Gavdos following a shipwreck on Sunday.
Reports at AMNA state that 77 migrants were on board heading towards Gavdos when it sank. 51 migrants have already been rescued and one has been pulled dead from the water.
As a result, search and rescue crews are looking for approximately 25 persons.
The search and rescue operation is being coordinated by the Greek Coast Guard’s Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and is comprised of four Frontex ships, boats and aerial means and a Coast Guard helicopter.
The 51 rescued people have already been collected and are safe on the ships that participated in the operation.
According to procedures, the migrants will be transported to migrant reception centers in Paleochora and Agia Galini on the island of Crete .
It is not uncommon for migrant shipwrecks to occur off the coast of Gavdos, as it is the furthest south of all Greek islands and along a common migration route from the north coast of Africa.
