A 28-year-old pregnant woman died in Greece after suffering a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics administered during her hospital admission, sparking an official inquiry into the circumstances of her death.
The woman, who was reportedly in the sixth week of pregnancy and the mother of a two-year-old girl, arrived at the hospital with bleeding and abdominal pain. She was admitted to the obstetrics and gynecology clinic, where doctors prescribed antibiotics.
Shortly after the treatment began, she went into anaphylactic shock. Despite immediate efforts by doctors, including intubation and transfer to the intensive care unit, her condition worsened. She suffered multiple organ failure and cardiac arrest before succumbing.
Key question under investigation
The central question now being examined is whether the woman was aware of an allergy to the specific antibiotic, and if hospital staff had asked about such a risk before administering the drug.
The president of the Greek federation of hospital workers, Michalis Giannakos, described the case as a tragedy, noting that “two lives were lost” and confirming that the hospital had ordered an internal investigation to determine the exact causes.
In a statement, the hospital confirmed that an administrative inquiry has been launched to clarify what led to the woman’s fatal reaction.
